40 Years Later and I’m Still Mad About This!

An empty vault, just like in that stupid show!

Not a complaint but an observation … it took a long time for the pharmacy staff to find my prescriptions today and in the time I waited, they could have found Al Capone’s lost vault … or find and return to me those three hours that I wasted watching that stupid special. Now I suppose I’m showing my age.

For a bit of context, and if my memory serves me (which it often does not!): Back in the early 1980s, Geraldo Rivera had this two-night live special called “The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vaults”. It was heavily promoted, for days if not weeks. I was glued to our nine-hundred-ton 24" tube television on those two nights. The suspense built over the course of the three or more hour special. And at the end, when Geraldo revealed the vault (note — singular, not plural as the title of the special promised…), all it had was a few broken bottles and some other paper trash. I felt like such a sucker for investing three hours of my life watching that waste of air space! I could have been playing on my Apple //e and maybe solving Zork I (or was it the second one at that time?), or reading a good book!

I probably glossed over that show and forgotten many details, but since it’s a bad memory I don’t really want to go back and find the footage now — sort of like how I’ve avoided watching The Star Wars Holiday Special, which may be the better of the two specials, although I feel I’ve done my penance by subjecting myself to Al Capone’s non-existent vault.

So yeah — it’s been about 40 years since Geraldo only found some broken bottles and other trash, but darn it — I’m still mad about it!
